Falstuvus pressed
his seal into the cooling wax that covered the edge of the scroll.
His symbol - a sleeping gryphon - remained as he set the seal
back on his desk and called for his servant to enter his chambers.
"Aye, I'm coming!" shouted the imp, who
trotted through the open door into the wizard's study. His eyes
widened as he saw the length of rolled parchment held out in
his master's hand.
"Another message to be sent, sir? Perhaps,
a love letter this time?"
Falstuvus sighed at the little creature.
"Pinch, I'm afraid this is a very grave matter. Give this to
Roland - he's the only one that can be trusted - and have him
take it to the Duke of Umsurrey."
Pinch nodded. "To the Duke of Umsurrey.
Yes, yes. I can remember."
The imp took the scroll and darted
up the stairs that led to the nests of the messenger hawks,
above the wizard's study. Yet, before he reached the wooden
and iron door at the peak of the tower, he stopped and held
the scroll before him.
"What's this one? A spell? A bit
of wizarding knowledge?" Pinch licked his thin lips. "Let's
have a little look. Yes, just a little one. No one would care
if I had some sneaking and peeking."
The imp slipped his long, cracked
nail underneath the edge of the scroll, breaking the seal that
had held the parchment in place, and was rewarded with a terrible
flash of light. The air around him vanished and a great heat
rushed into his lungs.
"Oh, my!" exclaimed the little creature,
before he burst into a hissing wisp of black vapor and was no
more. |
