Madren pushed
through the thick roots which had grown over the entrance
of the cave and motioned for his companion to advance into
the night ahead of him. Behind them, they left Ilse the Wyrdling
to rest within the foul air of her mystic's den.
"Have you ever heard such lies?"
"She is a seer," answered Runar.
"I have paid her tribute and she has told me what I have come
to learn."
"She's a witch. Her words are
meant to replace the fire in your heart with a cold fear."
Madren growled as Ilse's prophecy - the witch's words - repeated
in his head. "This is nothing but lies and foolish talk. How
do you fear a day? A day cannot wield steel or command an
army against you."
"It is not the day that I fear
- not the waning of the moon or the setting of the sun - but,
that which I've been warned comes for me on that day: something
as black and wicked as to drive my heart to stall and the
blood to freeze in my arm. We shall see much on the Ides of
March - ruin, wrack, and the red fires of doom."
Madren groaned. "Such are the
warnings of high-priced soothsayers. I'll greet the Ides in
deep, drunken dreaming."
"Stay in your bed, if you must,
Madren. Sleep long until the Ides are behind you. But, should
you look for me, you shall find me on the field, dressed for
battle and ready to break the arrows of my enemies upon my
shield. And, should this evil find you in your bed, may the
gods help you, 'cause I won't." |
