Borager carefully picked his way down the tilted wooden stairs to the lower deck. The hull of the ship had begun to creak and a gentle motion - up and down and up again - signaled that the tide was coming in. If he didn't discover something of value in the hold, he would soon find himself trapped in the ruins of the vessel as it was dragged back out to sea.
"Hurry, Bors!" cried Falts through the hatch above the stairs. His red hair had become matted against his forehead from the heavy rains that pelted the wracked ship, and he wiped at his brow to clear his vision. "Big waves a'comin' in. Looks like a nasty squall comin' ashore."
Borager waved his friend off and dropped down into the swirling saltwater. Had he been a human, it would have wetted his legs just above the knees. For a gnome, the ocean soaked him through at the waist.
"Ya see anything?" questioned Falts, anxious to be away from the angry sea and holding a mug of some steaming brew.
"Calm, yerself! Not yet," answered Borager. Yet, to his surprise, the gnome did see something. As the ship shifted with the rising tide and the waves began to lap with greater force against the ruptured hull, something appeared - blue and gleaming. The gnome pushed aside a drifting clump of seagrass and reached his hairy hand down through the water. He felt a great rush of warmth rising up to meet his fingers as they fumbled to catch hold of the slippery object. As he drew it out of the water, Borager gripped the thing as tightly as he could, fearful to let it slip from his grasp.
Seeing his friend dip into the flooded hold and produce a disc of wrought silver and cut gems caused Falts' mouth to flop open with surprise.
           "What's it? What ya find?"
           "A treasure."
